Students examine the current landscape of digital transformation in European healthcare systems and explore how established workflows interact with emerging digital tools.

The module introduces key technologies in digital healthcare, including electronic health records, telemedicine, AI-driven clinical decision support, and wearable health devices. Students evaluate their benefits, limitations, and practical implications for care coordination, efficiency, patient outcomes, and stakeholder collaboration.

Further topics include barriers to digital health adoption, such as fragmented infrastructures, interoperability challenges, cost pressures, reimbursement structures, ethical questions, and resistance to change. Students also compare minimally, typically, and highly digitized healthcare systems to understand how context affects implementation success.

The module covers current models of technology use in healthcare delivery, with a focus on European healthcare systems. Students learn how digital tools are integrated into partially digitized care environments and how digital transformation affects clinical workflows, organizational structures, and stakeholder expectations.

A further component is the analysis of digital healthcare technologies. Students examine electronic health records, telemedicine, AI-driven systems, and wearable technologies, while critically assessing their advantages, limitations, and potential impact on patient care and system efficiency.

The module also addresses the practical and structural barriers that influence digital health adoption. These include ethical questions related to AI, reimbursement models, health technology assessment, fragmented infrastructures, interoperability challenges, and the gap between successful pilot projects and sustainable large-scale implementation.

Qualifications

Participants who successfully complete the module will be awarded 5 ECTS points. The credit points are awarded after passing the module examination.
