Module 1 - Fundamentals (5 ECTS)

Exam performance: 60-minute written exam on the module content

Purpose: Prepare students to understand and apply the preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic foundations of periodontal care within a holistic view of systemic health, individual risk factors, and patient communication.

Module 2 - Basic Knowledge and Concepts (5 ECTS)

Credit Points: 5 ECTS
Exam performance: 60-minute written exam on the module content

Purpose: Equip students to make evidence-based periodontal diagnoses and treatment decisions by understanding disease etiology, risk factors, clinical testing, non-surgical therapy, and patient compliance.

Module 3 - Pathology and Therapy I (5 ECTS)

Credit Points: 5 ECTS
Exam performance: oral examination of 20 minutes

Purpose: Enable students to diagnose complex periodontal conditions and plan interdisciplinary treatment strategies that balance tooth preservation, implant restoration, surgical therapy, and referral decisions.

Module 4 - Scientific Work (5 ECTS)

Module Coordinator: Dr. rer. nat. Michael Beithe
Duration: 1 semester
Credit Points: 5 ECTS
Exam performance: portfolio examination: written exposé for scientific project (5-8 pages) + presentation (10 min).
The grade of the portfolio examination is made up of 1/2 of the term paper and 1/2 of the exposé and the presentation. The exposé and the presentation are weighed 2:1.

Purpose: Develop students’ ability to conduct scientific research, critically evaluate literature, formulate research questions, and plan academic projects according to scientific standards.

Module 5 - Pathology and Therapy II (5 ECTS)

Purpose: Prepare students to plan and perform advanced periodontal and implant-related therapies using surgical, regenerative, biological, and microsurgical treatment principles.

Module 6 - Periodontology in a Multidisciplinary Context (5 ECTS)

Purpose: Enable students to integrate aesthetic and regenerative approaches into periodontal and implant therapy through theoretical knowledge and practical application of innovative treatment concepts.

Module 7 - Implant Therapy I (5 ECTS)

Credit Points: 5 ECTS
Exam performance: Portfolio examination, consisting of an ungraded practical prerequisite in the form of a supervised clinical performance during a scheduled clinical weekend (practical training unit), and a graded written reflection report (approx. 10 pages) in which students document, analyse, and critically reflect on their practical implantological experiences with explicit reference to current scientific literature.

Purpose: Provide students with foundational implantology knowledge and practical skills in implant planning, osseointegration, implant materials, and clinically effective, aesthetic implant therapy.

Module 8 - Implant Therapy II (5 ECTS)

Purpose: Strengthen students’ supervised clinical competencies in implant placement, soft tissue management, and the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of peri-implant diseases.

Module 9 - Project Work and Colloquium (5 ECTS)

Duration: 1 semester

Exam performance: Independent preparation of 2 case presentations followed by presentation and discussion in the group

Purpose: Enable students to apply cross-module knowledge in documented clinical case work, justify evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic decisions, and present their results to an expert audience.

Master Thesis (15 ECTS)

Module Coordinator: Prof. Dr. med. Johan Wölber
Duration: 20 weeks for the written master's thesis
Credit Points: 15 ECTS
Exam performance: The module examination consists of the following examinations:
-written master’s thesis (2/3 of the module grade)
-oral examination in the form of a presentation and defense of 60 minutes (1/3 of the module grade) with a weighting of 2:1.

Purpose: Enable students to independently research and develop a complex topic within their field, apply scientific methods, and present and defend results in a structured academic format.

Key Content:

  1. Master’s Thesis – independently select and develop a topic in consultation with the supervisor; create an exposé for registration with the examination board.
  2. Scientific Work – apply theoretical, analytical, and methodological skills to derive new knowledge.
  3. Interdisciplinary Assessment – evaluate relationships, design theories, and propose practical solutions.
  4. Colloquium – present and defend thesis findings; justify methods and conclusions.

  • Completed university degree in dentistry recognized in the country of origin and
  • at least two years of professional experience as a dentist
  • English language skills at B2 level (CEFR)
  • Entrance exam and selection interviews, if necessary
