Career Day at DIU: Preparing for the German Job Market

21. Juli 2026

Studying is one thing. Successfully entering the German job market is another. To support our international students on this journey, the Career Day at Dresden International University (DIU) focused on career planning, professional orientation, and networking.

A Roadmap for Starting a Career in Germany

At the heart of the event was the presentation “Working in Germany: Opportunities, Processes, and Documents.” Birgit Brand from the Career Service at TUD Dresden University of Technology provided practical insights to help students prepare for their careers in Germany:

  • Language Opens Doors

Professional expertise provides an important foundation. In practice, however, many companies in Saxony expect applicants to have German language skills at B2 level or above.

  • Quality over Quantity

Generic applications rarely stand out. Résumés and cover letters should be tailored to the requirements of each position. When applying for jobs, quality matters more than quantity.

  • Understanding the Rules

Students who wish to work alongside their studies also need to be familiar with the relevant regulations. One of the key guidelines discussed was the limit of 20 working hours per week during the academic term.

  • Opportunities in a Strong Economic Region

With the Silicon Saxony network and approximately 82,500 employees, one of Europe’s most dynamic high-tech clusters is located right on our doorstep. Dresden and the surrounding region offer international graduates a wide range of opportunities to start and develop their careers.

Connecting Students across Cohorts

The get-together following the presentation was just as valuable as the practical information. Students from different cohorts had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas.

From application strategies and study groups to recommendations for a relaxed evening in Dresden’s Neustadt district, conversations like these strengthen our international community and create connections beyond the classroom.
