Expert School - Damage Tolerance in Engineering Structures (DaTES)

Date:

  • April 17  – May 07, 2023
  • July 17  – August 08, 2023
  • Location: Dresden, Germany
  • Fee: 1.400 €* (flight/visa/food/accomodation have to be paid extra)

Participants addressed:

  • Graduates in engineering and natural science as well as practitioners in the engineering, material science and even computation field

Overview

Engineering structures are exposed to degradation once being in operation. This poses a challenge, would it be in design or even during in service of those structures. To take an optimum advantage of those structures’ light weight design and/or operational life, application of the damage tolerance design principle becomes unavoidable.

Damage tolerance in design is based on the principle, that damage – or any kind of degradation – is allowed to exist in a structure, provided it will not lead to any critical situation and hence safety concern. Damage tolerance can be achieved when loading conditions as well as the locations of degradation of the respective engineering structures are known. In that case inspections mainly based on non-destructive testing (NDT) have to be performed at intervals, such that the degree of degradation can be identified before the level of tolerable damage is achieved and a repair of the structure can be made in time.

Along the DaTES Expert School to be performed, participants will be introduced into the damage tolerance design principle including the techniques this principle is based upon. This includes the way on how to measure and analyze loads, numerically simulate structures in terms of stresses, strains, fatigue life and NDT, perform inspection and testing, and possibly configure systems to perform an engineering structure’s health monitoring.

Topics:

  • Introduction to Damage Tolerance
  • Structural Mechanics
  • Force, Equilibrium, Stress & Strain
  • Notches & Fatigue
  • Service Load Spectra
  • Fatigue Life Evaluation – Simulation & Experiment
  • Fracture Mechanics
  • Introduction into NDT & Mechanical Vibrations
  • Ultrasonic Based NDT
  • Electromagnetics Based NDT
  • Thermography Based NDT
  • Damage Tolerance Principles
  • Structural Health Monitoring

The DaTES Expert School will be run jointly between Dresden International University (DIU) and IMA Materialforschung und Anwendungstechnik GmbH (IMA). Both organizations are internationally well-known and are based in Dresden/Germany. DIU as an an-institute of Dresden University of Technology offers degree courses in various disciplines including NDT. IMA is an internationally most renown organization for testing, monitoring and certification for the entire supplier’s industry.

Each day of the DaTES Expert School a DIU lecturer will present the theory and an IMA representative will present a practical application of the topics addressed above. The summer school will take place next or within the premises of IMA, such that participants will have a chance to take part in real world testing being performed at full scale. Participants will have to pass an assessment at the end to obtain a certificate, that can also be credited to degree courses along the same track offered by DIU and IMA.

Participants will also have the option to visit famous places closer by on the weekends, starting from Dresden and moving onto Berlin, Saxon Switzerland, and/or Prague.
