Self-study at home
During the entire course of the programme, an intense contact with the university tutor in charge in Dresden exists between courses. At the end of each course, the participants receive a list of tasks, which they are supposed to deal with up to the next course. The schedule is coordinated so that the written works can be compiled in the meantime and sent to the lecturers for examination, correction, and feedback. The materials to be created are used for checking whether the contents of the last course were understood and processed as well as for written exercises for the planning and evaluation of studies and in the presentation of the results (e. g. design of a planned study, statistical analysis, draft for a scientific lecture, structure for a publication, or a review of a scientific manuscript).

Research stay
The research visit lasts four weeks (given interest and availability, up to three months). The guest research groups are selected in regard of the specific qualifications and the interests of the participant. The stay is supposed to take place in a different country than the country of origin of the participant in order to create Europe-wide contacts, which are considered crucial for a long-term cooperation and common project proposals in European research programmes.

Practical experience
An internship in a therapeutic facility for the treatment of patients with substance use (four weeks) is part of the programme. The organizers, in close collaboration with the participants, choose a suitable institution (for example with regard to special interests in certain substances as alcohol or drugs). It is the objective that the participants gain some practical experiences and skills in dealing with patients with substance disorders.

Examination
Examination consists of the assessment of written documents as well as scientific lectures. The following performances are included:

  • preparation and submission of two scientific manuscripts (submission, revision, resubmission)
  • a scientific project proposal with all components including cost calculation,
  • two lectures / oral presentations
  • a review of the scientific state of knowledge for a certain scientific topic and
  • the assessment of the homework between the courses.
