Vehicles, like automobiles, trains, ships or aircraft, rotating machinery, reactors and microelectronic devices, but also constructions like dams, towers and bridges need a maximum of reliability, security and long-living function as criteria for their quality. In many cases monitoring through inspection has to be performed continuously by automatic equipment to guarantee quality during manufacturing and to monitor damages occurring in advance before those may become critical.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) measurements based on a wide range of physical principles and realized as an inspection hardware work non-invasive and become increasingly important in various applications. Application of NDT today is an indispensable requirement to guarantee state of the art quality products worldwide.

Despite this development there is a lack of adequate NDT experts highly sought by companies with different profiles of manufacturing.

DIU Dresden International University as a leading institution in a network consisting of

Technische Universität Dresden,
Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken,
Fraunhofer-Institute of Non-Destructive Testing, Saarbrücken and Dresden
German Society of Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP), Berlin

offers a Master Program

                                      Non-Destructive Testing M. Sc.

Students joining the program will gain solid fundamental and specialized knowledge in all representative areas of NDT. (See also description of modules). Small classes (15 participants) enable efficient and individual learning supported by profound scientific care in theoretical and experimental exercises. Students will be familiarized with modern equipment based on all major methods in NDT.

Besides their scientific qualification the graduates will gain extended international and intercultural experience.

Successful graduates will get qualified to start their career in a variety of very different companies dealing with transportation, energy (nuclear included), chemical processing, micro and nanoelectronics as well as in institutions of public security and possibly much more.

The program is tailored towards an advanced specialization in mechanical, electrical and civil engineering and can lead to highly promising professional careers.

NDT is a full-time master program which lasts 24 months. The course is structured on a modular basis with modules offered and completed in a consecutive sequence. Lessons can also be offered as a block system. Laboratory sessions within the research modules are carried out in the research labs of the Fraunhofer-Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and also at BAM in Berlin. English language training.

The concept covers 9 basic modules, 5 specialized modules, 2 modules related to own research and the Master Thesis with 120 credits in total. The program starts with an English language training for special purposes. Furthermore, each student can apply for a special Certificate of the German Society of Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP).

Basic modules:

  1. Material Science, Metallic Materials
  2. Polymer Materials & Composites
  3. Measurement Techniques
  4. Quality Management
  5. Numerical Methods & Signal Processing
  6. Lab Sessions & Signal Processing
  7. Introduction into NDT & Magnetic Field theory
  8. Sound & Vibration
  9. Optics

Special Modules

  1. Acoustic Methods
  2. Electromagnetic Methods
  3. Radiology
  4. Optoelectronics & Thermography
  5. Fatigue, Fracture & Microscopy

Research Modules

  1. Basic Course of DGZfP
  2. Research Internship

Master’s Thesis

Lecturers will be evaluated by the students after each group of lessons for quality assurance purposes and feedback-sessions will be held. Internal quality assurance is done by the academic course director and the responsible boards of Dresden International University.

  • A Master’s/Bachelor’s Degree (4 years or 180 credit points) preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, material sciences and physics.
  • Proficiency in English language (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT79 plus oral and written interview)
  • Practical experience is advantageous
